Exploring the Intersection of Self, Functionality, and Mortality

My work delves into the intimate connection between my personal identity and the broader human experience. By incorporating elements of nature, self-portraits, and functional pottery, I aim to create pieces that are not only visually engaging but also deeply meaningful.

I have always been drawn to the natural world and its ability to ground us. My artwork frequently features earthy tones mixed with bright colors, mirroring the contrasts and complexities of life itself. The use of glaze combinations, particularly those that result in a drippy effect, allows me to explore the unpredictability and fluidity of existence. These visual choices are not just aesthetic; they are a reflection of my inner world—a world where beauty is found in the imperfect and the transient.

Self-portraiture plays a significant role in my work, serving as both a therapeutic process and a means of self-discovery. As someone who has grappled with body image and the fear of death, I find solace in the act of creating. Through my art, I attempt to love myself more, to leave a piece of myself behind, and to be remembered long after I am gone. My functional pottery, like the "August Glow" and "My Buddy August" dinnerware collections, are personal extensions of my home and life, designed to bring warmth and familiarity to those who use them.

Ultimately, my work is an ongoing dialogue with myself and the world around me. It is a way for me to confront my fears, celebrate my joys, and connect with others on a deeply human level. Whether through the intimate act of creating self-portraits or the communal experience of sharing a meal on handcrafted pottery, I strive to create art that resonates, comforts, and endures.
